Mandarin

We have been learning Mandarin throughout Term 3 and had the opportunity to learn to write the Chinese characters for the numbers 1-10 using some magic paper and water. Pretty cool!

Art of Aotearoa

We have been looking at icons and what symbols, brands, colours, patterns and food we identify with our heritage. We have compared icons from our own heritage with others from around the world.


We have also researched New Zealand artists and explored what inspires them. After watching some good old classic advertisements, we had some fun on Google Draw to use New Zealand iconic brands to produce some New Zealand slang posters.

Speeches

Wow, what an experience. Speeches were the writing focus for the first four weeks of Term 3. From picking a topic to planning and writing, Room 4 has been amazing. While the thought of giving a speech had a few of us wobbling at the knees, we all got up and gave a variety of great speeches. We had a range of styles and topics with informative speeches on bullying, baby brothers and Donald Trump; persuasive speeches on the upside of PlayStation use, caring for our community and why kids should be allowed to bike on the footpath; and thought provoking speeches on driverless cars and futuristic schools. As a class, we enjoyed listening to everyone, discussing the strengths of each speech, providing helpful feedback and developing our oral language skills. Bring on next year when we will all be experts!

A huge congratulations to Nina B and Libby for representing our class at the VAS speech finals, you made us all so proud! Nina, well done for gaining second place in the finals.

Taniwha Art

We have looked at a few new  art techniques this term. One of these is resist art. This is achieved by first planning a design in chalk. We chose to design a taniwha because we had been reading Maori myths. Next we coloured our page using crayons, taking care to plan for white space by using white crayon. Finally, we used a black dye to wash all over our work. The waxy crayons resist the dye instead fills all the little spaces and washes over our chalk lines giving our work some sharp black outlines. Cool! Come and see them all in the foyer and class.

Fairy Bread Procedural Writing

Reading procedures is something we do all the time when baking, cooking, building a flat pack or constructing a Lego set but have you ever tried writing one? Ensuring you have ALL the steps can be a challenge and it is easy to assume other people will 'know what you're talking about'. Well, in class we set our selves a little challenge to write the instructions needed for fairy bread... and a buddy had to follow them. We had some interesting outcomes with some sprinkles but no butter, too many sprinkles, not quite enough sprinkles and some very strange crust cutting instructions. On the whole though we did a great job and boy did it taste good!

What a Term!

Wow! Room 4 has had a great start to the year! The big focus for Term One was teamwork. As a team, we may each have different strengths and weaknesses but by working together and listening to each other we can make great things happen. For the final two weeks of the term, we had the pleasure of Polly joining us all the way from England. It was great to see Room 4 as such a welcoming bunch and we wish Polly all the best for her travel home with her family.

Term Two looks like it will be a great one, hope you are ready to get rolling...

"The task was to build a 2D shape based on retro video games. He will choose some to display in his room. I made an owl and a pineapple. We had a range of colours to use and had to slide the pieces together on rods and we had all different shapes and sizes to work with."- Mia
